You either know what these are and have already hit the buy button, or you’re too young to remember the Brian Eno-fuelled craze for these ambient boxes and are about to enter a portal to a different time. We must have sold several - many - thousands of these in their various iterations, including editions made in collab with Philip Glass and Throbbing Gristle, and after about a decade in the wilderness, they’re now back, in a new replica version of the very first edition from 2005 - that’s before the Iphone era - with improved controls and sound quality. oh, and that all important line out, for your buddha boxing!
In 2005 the Beijing-based duo of Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian released their first, soon to be iconic “Buddha Machine” loop box, a quirky pocket soundsystem that propelled sound art into the consumer mainstream. It spawned a whole cultural movement, fuelled by Brian Eno professing his love for them, and an era of live show "Buddha Boxing" improvisations.
The original version has been long sold-out and fetches crazy prices second hand, followed by various further iterations made in collaboration with Philip Glass and Throbbing Gristle. This new edition is a replica of the very fiest version, featuring the original loops in all their 8-bit Lo-Fi glory and available in 5 different colours.
"The classic loops of the original FM3 Buddha Machine evoke instant nostalgia for a slower, more simple world. Born before the iPhone era, this iconic device has weathered two decades of pop culture and fashion trends, yet remains defiantly, heroically unique. Its enduring simplicity cloaks an extraordinary power: the ability to transcend time. It is both a sonic portal to a hands-on analogue past and a bridge to a digital ever-present. This is not just a re-issue; it is a revival and refinement of a sonic manifesto that unfolds softly, gently and organically, resonating with the subtle rhythms of life. The Buddha 1 2023 edition from FM3. Available in 5 colours: Red, Orange, Green, Blue and limited-edition Pink. Features upgraded sound quality and user experience. Louder speaker and 2 new individual side buttons make device control more direct and intuitive."
The Buddha Machine is a truly unique musical device that prefers to sit in the background, quietly and gently working its sonic magic.
