Boomkat Product Review:
While it might have been a while since their breakthrough ‘Milkman’, Deerhoof have been hard at it, ploughing away at a sound that’s very much their own. It’s a sound that’s been mercilessly re-appropriated by recent hip pop too (hello Sleigh Bells, we see you) – so it’s hardly surprising to hear the band going harder than ever before on ‘Breakup Song’. The rhythms are more confounding, the vocals more scratchy and the backdrop of synthesizers more abrasive than ever, and I suppose it’s the only way they could have successfully gone with the sound. It works, coming across like a futurist take on Melt Banana’s deranged, serrated punk. Sometimes sounding like remixes of Human League and at other sounding like a math rock re-interpretation of Aarabmusik’s twisted trance it’s defiantly impressive stuff from beginning to end, and another good reason to find out what was so good about Deerhoof in the first place.
