Well now Slowdive have enjoyed a turn in their fortunes and every contemporary shoegaze act on the planet is claiming dibbs on who was into them first, it seems quite a good time for them to get back together and do another album. No such luck though, instead the band they ‘became’ Mojave 3 have new material due, and although it might lack the kind of sci-fi beauty Slowdive had in droves, ‘Breaking the Ice’ is still a lovely piece of shoegazing Americana, if such a thing actually exists. The title track does exactly what it says on the tin, and is primed for a summer’s day – it reminds me a little of the Wannadies actually (remember them?) and if there’s any frost left after this has had a loud airing I’d be very surprised. The flipside is more of a sun-baked desert swept jam and takes the tempo down a little yet still keeps the emotion intact. A good fun summer 7”, just what we need to coax the sun out of it’s cloudy bed!
