Boomkat Product Review:
Matthew Herbert and Zilla consolidate their working methods on a cranky R&G fusion, Brand New Love, backed with a ruder 2-step redraw by Paul Woolford’s Special Request.
The original Brand New Love sounds curiously dated, like some Geiom piece from c. 2009 or something, whilst Special Request’s remix is more vintage-fresh, sparking off woodblock snares, tetchy bass jabs and spin-backs like a rogue El-B bit, before the strings recall Synkro productions.
On the B-side you get one of Herbert’s lumpy line-dances, The Peacock - one of those grooves that always lets us know we’re in the wrong club, or it’s time for a ‘bine - whereas the hunched roll of Cheekbone fares much better with its sawn-off rave stabs and toiling subs.
