Boomkat Product Review:
Chicago footwork G-force from Boylan, joined by Jana Rush and standout DJ Hank remix, on his debut for Brooklyn’s Low Key Recs
OG alum of the ‘Bangs & Works Vol. II’ set and Teklife label, Boylan brings a playful baga samples to his tightly coiled typewriter percussion in four original shots, plus two collaboration with Jana Rush, beside DJ Hank’s remix. Left to his own devices, Boylan works up a crafty ghettohouse slant on a classic electro-trance lick in ‘On Tha Move’, and comes off like The Avalanches doing footwork with the bucolic sampledelia of ‘Flautaz’, with his discerning ear for a choice sample also at work in the footwork disco NRG of ‘Self Control: My World’, and recalling the ride sentimentality of early DJ Nate in the country footwork of ‘Fuck Em All’. Chi royalty Jana Rush lends a hand on two big highlights, the lathered arps and pointillist rhythm of ‘Let’s Go’, and footwork blues of ‘Chill Keyz’, and DJ Hank ramps ‘Self Control: My World’ with recalibrated trills and filigree sampler chops.
