'Both Lights' is the third LP of chest-bursting rock ecstasy from Portland, Oregon's Au, and features no less than two appearances from Colin Stetson and his big f**koff saxophone. Now a two piece since 2008's 'Verbs', Dana Valatka handles the tightly controlled and impressive percussion while Luke Wyland claims credit for practically everything else - vocals, keyboard, sampler, lap steel, banjo and melodica. With scant regard for almost anything other than the most bombastic, epic arrangements and feats of musicianship, this is a furiously positive yet commandingly blissful album, Wyland's booming baritone front and centre over songs which flit from choral folk to feral jazz-punk and swelling indie-pop with gleeful abandon. The likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and Huw Stephens are already on their tail and probably many more will follow suit. Fans of Deerhoof or Arcade Fire should definitely check this.
