Boomkat Product Review:
Three cheers for Drag City and the return of Loose Fur! The side project of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and Glen Kotche with their good friend and hero Jim O’Rourke, Loose Fur is a combination of both bands strengths – the unstoppable style and distinct songwriting of Wilco crossed with Jim O’Rourke’s simple melodic touch and sense of rhythm. Shooting for a 60s ‘classic rock’ vibe there is a lightness and humour to the recording which elevates Loose Fur far above their peers, every song on this economical album is a mini masterpiece. The opening track ‘Hey Chicken’ sets the scene beautifully; a retro stomper of a track, perfect for some in-car headbanging or post club foot tapping – whatever tickles your fancy. Before too long ‘Answers to Your Questions’, one of the album’s highlights, takes us into classic O’Rourke territory with soft and mournful guitar patterns and a deep sense of hope, elements lost in the recording of so many albums. There is something about listening to this album that feels complete; a real triumph.
