Boomkat Product Review:
The Giant Skyflower Band is a side project headed by Glenn Donaldson of Skygreen Leopards. The central preoccupation of this record is to explore the darker side of psychedelic folk music, coming across a bit Charles Manson, while also tapping into the mindset of Syd Barrett at his most labyrinthine, or more recently the downbeat blues of The Bummer Road or Wooden Wand at his weariest. From the opening sitar strains of 'Oh Mary Green' you know where this record's going, the song's tangled up guitar chords and murmured pop hooks offering a kind of archetypal '60s prog-stoner anthem. As skewed a vision of songwriting as this is, Donaldson's melodic awareness is a consistent force throughout the album 'Bitter Wild Rabbits/Builds The Bone' delivers the kind of meandering rewiring of Sgt. Pepper's-inspired pop the album promised from its very beginning, and is a clear highlight. In a similar vein is 'Feast Of Blood', which turns out to be an upbeat campfire songalong, far removed from the Herschell Gordon Lewis-style title. Recommended.
