Boomkat Product Review:
Volume 3 in the Black Mills Tapes seduces us to a fuzzy, woozy world of ferric fidelity, teasing the memory with hints of vintage TV and library disco themes and a ghostly, intangible grasp of '90s ambient spirits. It should come as no surprise that this renowned studio engineer is affiliated with the Ghost Box crew, but his sound is much more prone to throbbing rhythms and serene pastoral synth drift than eldritch pop or prog. These sounds really take on a life of their own on cassette, mingling their trickling emissions with the format's inherent hiss and fug to create a psychedelically-charged and mysterious audio interzone where bleeps zip across arpeggiated stereo field flyovers like Jetson's hovercars and supple basslines keep motoring towards a glowing crimson horizon. This is what Carl Craig listens to when he goes fishing.
