Boomkat Product Review:
Rush Hour head Antal cues up rarities from Larry Heard, DJ Okapi, Däm Funk, and more, for Japan’s Rainbow Disco Club in a richly rewarding compilation
Straddling evergreen global obscurities and Dutch newcomers in exemplary form, the levels live up to what we’d expect from one of the men behind the fruitiest labels and distros on the planet.
A strong lick of South African beatdown opens the set with Tlale Makhane & ZiyawaKaZitha’s deep slow burner ‘Embabhunswini’, as tipped to Antal by DJ Okapi, compiler of the ‘Pantsula!’ primer, beside fructose-boosted keys of Kiwi artist Benny Salvador on ‘Cardboard Box’, and Larry Heard on a sublime ip with ‘Twilight’ off the ‘Black Havana’ album. Shohjo-Tai & Red Bus St Project also impress with the freestyle-meets-Prince funk of ‘Electric City’, nestled next to the whistle-able melody of ‘China Romance’ by Ishida-Express I, with Dianne Mower supplying stacked jazz-funk chords of ‘The Secret Sign’, and Bonnefooi gives up a trim edit of Guadaloupian synth funk by Jocelyn Mocka.
The 7” cools out with the downbeat jazz bliss of ‘Preludia’ by Han Litz Group, before introducing Los Calxunos Tuyos at the intersection of Klaus Weiss and Brazi;limn music with the nimble bustle of ‘Niaga’, and local A’dam group Kamma on the breezy ace ‘Snow in April’.
