Berlin-based DJ and producer Vivian Koch arrives on AD 93 for her second album of moody, soundtrack-influenced breaks-flecked ambient IDM. Like Sophia Loizou remixing Global Communication.
Koch has been DJing since she was just 16 years old, and brings a chiseled expertise to her production. Well-versed in club formula, she's able to weave it into her frothy Artificial Intelligence -era synthscapes without ever succumbing to the template. So glitchy breaks peer through haunted pads and luminous textures but never completely take hold, allowing the album to almost operate in the ambient realm completely.
'Beyond Contact' reminds of the early days of IDM, when chill-out rooms were thick with smoke and the lifted sounds of AFX, The Orb and Global Communication, but Koch injects her productions with more than a little contemporary gloss. The album hangs together like the soundtrack to a particularly dreamy episode of Black Mirror, it's ominous and eerie, but not without hope.
