Boomkat Product Review:
A special edition cd produced for Pelt's 2006 tour, the Grateful Dead referencing 'Skullf*ck/Bestio Tergum Degero' is a high quality recording of a live show Pelt played at the infamous Knitting Factory in New York. So why should we get excited about a live recording? Well you're forgetting that with bands like Pelt, no two shows will ever be identical and this particular show is about as essential as they get. It all kicks off with something quite special - a full band cover of band-leader Jack Rose's gorgeous 'Calais to Dover' which featured on his last (and best) solo album 'Kensington Blues'. The band dynamic gives the track a feeling that it previously lacked, that's not to say it was missing it exactly, but this version is radically different and all the better for it. Violin and harmonium cover the music in blissful drones, and Rose picks out the melody in a way that has never been heard in his solo shows -it lasts for over 20 minutes and is a fully enveloping experience. The rest of the album is made up of the three parts of 'Bestio Tergum Degero' a drone piece of epic proportions. This is more obvious Pelt; deep sub-aquatic drones primed to shake you to the core, exactly what we were after.
