Remarkably infectious debut EP from the aptly monikered Highlife aka Sleepy Doug Shaw, featuring contributions from members of White Magic, Gang Gang Dance and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. The clue to his sound is in his name, borrowing heavily from a timeless African Pop style of clean, crisp and circular guitar melodies and imbuing it with his joyful indie vocals. The story of how Shaw arrived at 'Best Bless' is almost as exotic as his music: moving from London to NYC at 19, before joining psyche-soul band White Magic, and in 2008 relocating to Trinidad to record incantations on a small portable setup. This all fed into the songs for 'Best Bless' which were laid down back in London, recorded by Harvey Birrel and played by himself with Haunted Grafitti's Tim Koh on bass and Jesse Lee of GGD on drums. Their efforts have paid off beautifully, from the breezy, beaming glee of 'Warfair' to the cascading melodies of 'F Kenya Rip', the waist-winding curl of 'Tuareg Dancehall' and the odd one out 'Wet Palm Trees', which was recorded on the eve of his departure from Trinidad.
