Berlin Atonal: More Light
Berlin Atonal mark their 3rd compilation with strong work by Nkisi, Laurel Halo, Heinrich Mueller and co’s XOR Gate, Lee Gamble, Vladislav Delay, Hiro Kone, Caterina Barbieri, Shackleton’s Tunes of Negation, Exael and many more
Arriving 5 years since the festival’s revival and its ‘Volume 3’ set - and 35 years since their seminal ‘Berlin Atonal 85’ tape - they draw for typically magisterial and brooding new electronic music in ‘More Light’, scanning the scene between Altar’s sweeping sci-fi panorama ‘Without Bodies’ and the synth algebra of XOR Gate’s ‘Boolean Logic Gate’ with some 19 tracks in just under 2 hours.
The set yields a killer cosmic Congo-tekno banger from Nkisi for the early AFX and Fifth Era fans, and Lee Gamble knocks out the scudding techno and choral shrapnel of ‘Polis’, while Peder Mannerfelt gets the title of the year rosette for his reckless dancehall techno racket ‘Let’s Get Metaphysical’, and Vladislav Delay goes fucking bezzerk in ‘Isonainen’. On a more spacious, composerly flex Laurel Halo billows cinematic widescreen strings in ‘Terrain (Prototype 3c)’, and Stroom aces Pablo’s Eye supply a smart update on their broodingly theatric cyber-noir in ‘A Way You’ll Never Be’.
