Following entries from Andre Galluzi, Marcel Dettmann, Len Faki and Ben Klock, Marcel Fengler is the latest Berghain resident to step up and deliver a mix for Ostgut Ton's mix series, and it's possibly the best of the lot: Fengler comes across as an old-school DJ in that he knows his tunes like the back of his hand and doesn't just add records to his box 'cos they're new and hyped-up. The mix strikes a nice balance between classic and factory-fresh tracks, some of which we've never heard, others which we'd forgotten how much we loved: Ratio's choppy '98 tech-houser 'Doublefeature', Dr Walker's killer remix of Byetone's 'Plastic Star' and 20:20 Vision's ageless 'Future Remembrance' from '97. Of the more up-to-the-minute fare, Regis's uniquely swinging remix of Tommy Four Seven is a welcome inclusion, as is Luke Slater's tough-as-nails LB Dub Corps fix of Fengler's own 'Thwak' and the pure 21st century jackers' delight of Duplex's Gerd remix, but none can compete with the sheer bounce of Seiji's ecstatically bass-heavy, fleet-footedly bruk 'More Of You'. Of the previously unreleased stuff, Peter Van Hoesen's 'Axis Mundi' has to be the highlight, going toe to toe with vintage Jeff Mills and Derrick May in the hard SF techno stakes, but we're also pretty smitten with Reagenz's deep house trip 'The Labyrinth' and especially Puresque's vampy warehouse thumper '001A', surely destined to be one of the year's biggest club hits when it drops in its own right. A proper techno mix this, undoubtedly contemporary but built to last rather than simply showcase the sounds of "now". Quality.
