Boomkat Product Review:
What would you get if you gave Godspeed You Black Emperor a box of metal records? Well I would suspect somebody has already researched this what with Pelican, Isis, Mono and countless other bands at the moment exploring the heavier end of post rock - post metal anyone? Snowblood are however rooted quite firmly in metal, wheras Mono always feel like a post rock act trying out some heavy riffs, Snowblood feel more like a metal band expanding their minds, experimenting with the form a little. In fact most of this album is surprisingly downplayed, leaving the thrashy riffage and throaty vocals to only when it is absolutely necessary, and spending a good proportion of the album focused on ambience, mood and texture. It is an odd mixture as the drones are less Sunn O))) and more Mogwai - so there is a juxtaposition of the quite obviously beautiful and the abrasive Norwegian influenced blackness - it works though, it works wonderfully. The long reflective passages add weight to the noisier segments, and the use of traditionally sung vocals is inspired. Snowblood may set purist metallers on edge but I for one think 'Being and Becoming' is marvellously forward thinking and a real gem in the current post-metal crop.
