Boomkat Product Review:
When The Mole took a two-day holiday in the midst of sessions for a new Modern Deep Left Quartet record at Mathew Jonson's Berlin studio earlier this year, the remaining members eased into their Cobblestone Jazz configuration - Jonson on SH1010 bass, Tyger Dhula on drums and Danuel Tate on Fender Rhodes - for the first time in a while. It's resulted in a strong EP, with 'Before This' sounding particularly sunny, free and contemporary: Jonson's elongated bass improvisations are instantly recognisable, as are Tate's keyboard interventions, but special props to Dhula, whose tough, conga-driven beat programming keeps this material on just the right side of the techno/fusion divide. 'Before That' is basically a live dub of the A-side, with a more stripped arrangement for the clubs but plenty of ivory-tinkling and bass soloing to unsettle the grid. Nice.
