Boomkat Product Review:
Following up a twelve that wrecked heads and ranked way up there as one of the biggest records of the 2008 was never going to be an easy task, but Hessle Audio's Pangaea cooly delivers two deep and laidback steppy killers for Hotflush in the 09. The uptempo garage inflections of 'You & I' are shunned in favour of a thickened dub based construction on 'Bear Witness', with lurching steppers syncopations held in place by a rich subbass heave, content to work on a relaxed flex with almost deep house touched atmospherics. 'Mosaix' on the flip immediately recalls the reorganised patterns of Martyn with a double bassline manipulated into curved angles under a snap-and-shake post-garage rhythm with ominous pads brewing something a little darker in the ether. It's still pretty hard to take that this is only his 3rd release, with such a confident and headstrong sound you'd be forgiven for thinking this was some kind of veteran of the scene but Pangaea is obviously a massive talent in the making. Those of you who love having their dub buttons pushed by the likes of Martyn, Appleblim, Ramadanman or Kontext should invest in this 12" double fast.
