Beam Me Up finds the great Daniel Johnston traipsing through some of the highlights of his back-catalogue with the assistance of an orchestrally proportioned backing band (featuring brass, strings, electronics and all the usual guitar/bass/drums accoutrements). Major classics like 'True Love Will Find You In The End', 'Devil Town' and 'Walking The Cow' are given great ensemble renditions, and although the troubled songwriter's voice is in slightly frail form the emotion's still very much there, and somehow the jazzy arrangements fit his wizened tones perfectly. Just listen to 'Love Enchanted': Daniel's weary delivery finds a sympathetic foil in the languid strings. It's all far better than you could ever expect in fact, sounding surprisingly raw and unpredictable considering the Bublé-friendly big-band format. You might find yourself hankering for a little more of Johnston's certifiably rockin' material, but as an alternate reading of his "Greatest Hits" this is surprisingly ace.
