Boomkat Product Review:
Merge Records founder and ex-Superchunk man Mac McCaughan returns with his ninth Portastatic album, so the question we really need to ask is - do we still care? Well, in a word yes, because McCaughan has a canny knack for pop hooks and a voice which seriously sounds like nobody else, and in a world of paint-by-numbers indie (did you even see the Brit awards last night?) it comes as incredibly refreshing to hear an album this unpretentious. McCaughan outdid himself with 2005's 'Bright Ideas' and now he follows on from that fully-developed rock sound on 'Be Still Please', yet manages also to add the extra layer of orchestration which he has honed writing film scores. The result is his most focused and enjoyable work to date, featuring songs as catchy (and potentially crossover) as 'I'm in Love (With Arthur Dove)' alongside heartfelt ballads such as 'Like a Pearl'. Although McCaughan probably gets most attention for his label and most notably signings such as the Arcade Fire, it might be worth not holding out for the next Arcade Fire album and diving straight into this, who knows when he'll find the time to forge another?
