Boomkat Product Review:
Bearing more than a passing resemblance to Jim O’Rourke’s poppier moments, this is the latest offering from Paul Duncan, whose debut album ‘To an Ambient Hollywood’ was also released on the Home Tapes label. Duncan melds classic pop/guitar songwriting (albeit with a slight shoegazer edge) with gorgeous electronic production to great effect. Basically he takes a huge chunk of O’Rourke, a sprinkle of Khonnor, a pinch of Mercury Rev and a touch of Sigur Ros, and we’re left with a coherent mish mash of shy odes to nostalgic moments lost. Head straight to the gorgeous instrumental track ‘Toy Piano’ for a Fennesz lite exploration into ambient sound, which is quickly followed by the beat heavy ‘You Look Like an Animal’. Undeniably different this not only shows off the talents of the producer, but also the label Home Tapes which live up to their promise by releasing something that keeps that air of home taping alive. Recommended.
