Boomkat Product Review:
Soundway make an unexpected and entirely welcome swerve into modern Angolan electronic dance music with Batida's eponymous debut album. The keener outernational observer might have noticed their inclusion on the fantastic Jesse & Crabbe album last year, but no mither if not, because this is as good an introduction you could want. Ten tracks deep, it's a sweltering yet vibrant hybrid of contemporary Kuduro with vintage samples lifted from 1970s Angolan tracks. It's a high energy, party-fired fusion, balancing Kuduro's tendencies towards European Techno sounds with a rich tapestry of vintage Afro-funk and soul plus rapped lyrics recalling the parallel sound of Rio street Funk. As you'd expect, it's all up to the typical high standards of Soundway's usual reissues, but this is brand new, fresh and charming, and recommended to anyone looking to update their tastes with a dose of modern African party sounds.
