Boomkat Product Review:
Originally issued in 1970, this LP by the Baroque Jazz Trio brings elements from non-Western musical disciplines into the realm of jazz.
Introducing the use of tabla as a percussive driving force. However, the most distinctive and surprising instrument in all this has to be the harpsichord - which is presumably where the 'Baroque' part of the band's name comes from. The combination of slick, bluesy figures, solid funk drums and those jarringly metallic keys evokes an imaginary face-off between DJ Shadow and Henry Purcell. Far more easily digested than most records with the word 'Jazz' in the title, this is pretty hard not to love. Essential.
