Boomkat Product Review:
Sam Barker returns with more impeccably-produced beatless trance, this time giving a nod to Manuel Göttsching's groundbreaking proto-Ibiza classic "E2-E4".
A sequel to 2019's hyperlimited 'peak time optimized' whitelabel 12" Barker001, 002 shows us what the British-born, Berlin-based producer, promoter and instrument builder has been up to since the release of his impressive 'Utility' full-length. Opener 'E7-E5' returns to the template he perfected on 'Debiasing', but makes a connection to 'E2-E4' not just in the title but in the sound too. Göttsching's 1984-released original signaled the way for the Balearic sounds that would come to dominate Ibiza, with euphoric chords repeating in a druggy haze; Barker's track adopts a similar methodology but veers closer to an established trance formula, adding booming bass to bring it into the 21st century.
On 'Bent', Barker drifts away from trance into choppy post-IDM rhythmic zones, inhabiting the intersection between Arovane and Objekt, allowing subtle breaks to erupt between flurries of kicks and glitches. Closer 'Polytely' dives again into the trance reflecting pool, polishing the EP off with heart-tugging harmonies and pinprick percussive patter.
