Boomkat Product Review:
The improvising ensemble of Circulasione Totale Orchestra are lead by legendary Norwegian Clarinet player Frode Gjerstad with various line-ups since its incarnation in 1984. For only their third recorded document of improvised performance, 'Bandwidth', Gjerstad plays with a diverse cast of characters utilising acoustic, electric and electronic instrumentation spanning young and old, with some 50 years and three continents dividing the ages of the youngest and oldest players, including Norwegian noise expert Lasse Marhaug, Crimetime drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and US trumpeter Bobby Bradford among their number. Spread over three discs, 'Bandwidth' was recorded at jazz festivals in Molde, Moers and Zürich, moving through varying shades of complexity and subtlety from taut polyrhythmic blasts to meditative quietude revealing the experience and intuition of the revered hands at work. As ever with Rune Grammafon, it's the sort of record you will come back to for many years to come, bearing repeated listens to explore the groups dynamic and often eruptive brand of improv.
