SVBKVLT's Osheyack and Nahash team up once again on 'Bait', another furious mess of flickering dancefloor rolls and batshit vocal samples that comes bundled with a pair of hard-as-nails remixes from Florentino and Safety Trance.
Following 2021's boundary-pushing 'Club Apathy' wasn't going to be easy, but Osheyack and Nahash chase the same dragon, providing a cache of cybernetic, cross-pollinated club evolutions that look past the contemporary landscape's obsession with mind-numbing nostalgia. There are no cheeky pop samples or reverential amen chops here - the duo instead task themselves with smearing a palette of unusual beats into rapid-fire dancefloor fillers that ignore melody in favor of percussive havoc.
'Bait' gets things started off on the right foot, with plasticky drum samples dotted enthusiastically around Fractal Fantasy-like helium vocals and crowd brays. Like Scratcha's DRMTRK experiments, it pokes around at the space between gqom, Jersey club and grime, moving into an unknown space, while Florentino's rework is even tougher; pulling the tempo down and turning Osheyack and Nahash's chaotic rhythms into a sensual cumbia throb, filling the gaps with squelchy, overdriven bass and haunted wails.
On 'Dream, Shit, Dream', the duo keep the tempo high and the energy hectic, punctuating their rapid-fire snares and flurried kicks with screams and acidic synth stings, and Venezuelan producer Safety Trance (fka Cardopusher) replies with by tweezing those stings into winding stabs that curl around an industrialized dembow groove.
