Boomkat Product Review:
Loud pressing of Danny Hyde’s personalised Coil mixes, presented as ‘the essential bridge between “Love’s Secret Domain” and the “Musick To Play In The Dark” series’. 2LP housed in gatefold jacket with download code...
At long last we take receipt of Coil’s Backwards; an “official”, posthumous release pieced together and mixed by esteemed studio engineer and member of their cabal, Danny Hyde, from original tapes recorded 1992 - 1996 between London and Trent Reznor’s Nothing Studios, New Orleans.
Stemming from a golden period of Coil’s output, it shares source material with The New Backwards and The Ape of Naples albums, including the original versions of A Cold Cell and Fire of the Mind, Hyde and Cold Spring intend it to be “an essential conduit, to understand the journey that was taken” between Love’s Secret Domain and the Musick To Play In The Dark series.
In that respect, it’s really pointed to Coil’s legion collectors and completists, and tends towards a lot of technoid/EBM cuts, which, if we’re honest, aren’t really our cup of Coil tea.
However, it does include the still-breathtaking original version of A Cold Cell and the shanty neo-folk of Fire of the Mind - worth the cost of entry alone.
