Tracks for Back On the Planet:
Boomkat Product Review
Self-confessed antecedent of Sun-Ra, Ras G, projects himself 'Back On The Planet' with his triumphant return to Brainfeeder. Since 2005 his battered, weed-fuelled shuttle has charted the outer limits of Ghetto Sonic Fiction, with each mission bringing back phantasmic visions of an omniverse where mutant strains of free and spiritual jazz, hip hop, African drumming and electronica fuse to create bold new expressions of the Afro-futurist psyche. In good company with the likes of Flying Lotus, Thundercat and The Gaslamp Killer, Ras G nevertheless stands out as a dis/connected, psychedelic soul, letting his mind wander to the most overgrown, unresolved and (some may say) messy zones of the LA beat sound. Since J Dilla passed away, there's few who can wreck a neck as badly as this boy, and more to his credit he does it without paying hagiographic deference to the man - his beats are looped at odd, jagged angles and fused with unstable, clashing timbres creating instinctively psychedelic harmonics and cosmic confusions that less intrepid, closed minded producers simply aren't capable of.
