Boomkat Product Review:
As Beirut fans will know, Ba Da Bing like to snap up pop mavericks at a tender age, and the curiously named Patrick Cleandenim is no exception, finishing recording his debut for the label at a mere 21 years of age. While Cleandenim cites David Axelrod and Jean-Claude Vannier as his principal influences, you'll also hear elements of both Tom Waits and Scott Walker in the ambitious arrangements, albeit channelled through the spirit of cabaret. In fact, to be more precise, the prospect of Jens Lekman singing show tunes with The Divine Comedy in the West End would probably nail down what this sounds like, although Cleandenim's vocal lacks the charm and richness of croon Lekman enjoys (but what else could you expect from such young vocal chords?) At times the album seems to place too much faith in the orchestrally proportioned troupe of additional musicians who handle the vast arrangements, and in all honesty the songs don't always measure up to that sort of upscaling. A promising debut nonetheless though.
