Boomkat Product Review:
Can founding member Irmin Schmidt first called upon the services of Kumo for his operatic reimagining of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, and now over ten years on, the collaboration remains strong.
Axoltl Eyes comprises a sequence of seven moody and evocative pieces of electronica, calling upon elements of modern composition and jazz as much as digital beat programming - trumpeter Ian Dixon contributes significantly to the record, often adding a welcome element of more humanistic melody to what otherwise tends to be a quite tricky listen, based around rhythmic awkwardness, as on 'Drifting Days, Crime Pays' with its slightly bewildering 10/8 'shuffle', or the miasmic tonal soup that is 'Umbilicus Clear'. In addition to the Axolotl Eyes album itself, this release also includes a 5.1 surround mix of the audio installation Flies Guys and Choirs, originally commissioned by the Barbican Centre, London.
