Boomkat Product Review:
I’m aware that there’s a lot of this kind of post-everything slashy rock around at the moment, but how much of it can claim to have a Thurston Moore seal of approval? Not only has the Sonic Youth frontman produced this album from ex Michiganites Awesome Color but he’s also released it on his very own Ecstatic Peace label. So if you were thinking of saying “Oh they sound like Sonic Youth” you’d better zip up, Thurston thinks it’s just fine and dandy! The truth is they actually sound a little more like Detroit legends the Stooges or MC5 with their percussive, bass heavy jams, and more like Brummie rockers Black Sabbath with their gutter-strength 70s throwback vocals and springy lead guitar, but this matters not when they rock so damn hard. There’s a tendency at the moment for bands to go ‘back to basics’ hell, even the godlike SY managed to go back to the old-school when they recorded their latest full-length ‘Rather Ripped’ and that’s certainly evident on ‘Awesome Color’. Thrashy guitar sounds and fuzzed up bass straddle thick, clipping percussion and everything sounds like it was recorded straight to tape in one take. There’s no bullshit here, there’s no posturing and no idealism – this is rock ‘n roll pure and simple, and I for one can see why Moore has been so wowed by the band. Labels everywhere are desperate to find the next big thing, desperate to find that shard of something rocky, punky or whatever to give them the sales they are clawing for and Moore has found that sparkle – let’s hope the band get the success they deserve.
