Boomkat Product Review:
Avi Buffalo is the alias of 19 year-old Californian songwriting prodigy Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, whose brand of summery pop was first introduced to the world with last year's wonderful 'What's In It For?' single. Here, he and his three similarly junior pals get together for a full album's worth of heart-warming, often remarkable spacey indie-rock. Having already opened for Vampire Weekend, Beach House and Owen Pallett, this group have arrived quickly, and on the strength of these recordings, it's easy to hear why that is: opener 'Truth Sets In' sets the scene with luscious, widescreen vocal layers, great, chiming guitars and a wonderfully satisfying scrunched-up snare at the centre of the mix. First time around it's easy to get carried away with just how great the recording is without even noticing the quality of the song itself, but that's just not possible with 'What's In It For?' which has the same sort of impact as The Shins' early material, carrying an undercurrent of Galaxie 500 along with it. Further into the tracklist 'Coaxed', 'Jessica' and the ever-so-slightly obscene 'Summer Cum' all confirm the near-greatness of this debut, with further cause for jubilation given by the uncannily Nels Cline-esque soloing on 'Remember Last Time'. Brilliant stuff.
