Boomkat Product Review:
In addition to ploughing his own furrow as an avant-folk solo artist, Nick Kuepfer has spent time playing as part of bands such as Aids Wolf and Hrsta. For this solo collection, Kuepfer compiles unusual sketched vignettes made up from acoustic guitars, layered loop pedal narratives and field recordings gathered from travels through Argentina. Avestruz isn't quite a travelogue, but it does feel like a diary of musical ideas that's been shaped by experience as much as by introspection. Kuepfer acts as a conduit for Latin American street sounds on the lively jig of 'Red Sand Market' - one of many evocative instrumentals - only for a piece like 'Vampyro' to serve up a more esoteric, soundscape-like affair. There's a successful exchange between loop-based song ideas and more experimental, collaged works here and Avestruz proves to be a quite unclassifiable and all the more unique the further you immerse yourself in it. Recommended.
