Accomplished debut album of NDW/Cold Wave Pop from Montreal's Xavier Paradis aka Automelodi for Pieter Schoolwerth's Weird Records organisation. With reference points from DAF to Martin Dupont and a host of more obscure operators, 'Automelodi' is brimming with romantic synth sensuality and keenly studied pop conventions. The fact that most of the lyrics are sung by Xavier in French lends a yearning sense of authentic European sophistication, and together with the polished production we could almost be listening to the real thing. The spidery synths of 'Stylo-Bille' call to mind Chris Carter or more recent Heinrich Mueller productions, while 'Rayons De Rien' has a distinct New Order feel and 'Buanderie Jazz' could be a Le Disques Du Crepulscule rarity from the Manchester/Brussels axis. Together with the brilliant artwork and fold out lyric sheet this is every bit the Pop treat, recommended to anyone who picked up the Minimal Wave Tapes compilation or following the output of Captured Tracks, Angular etc.
