Boomkat Product Review:
Robs Records was the notorious record imprint of Rob Gretton, one time manager of Joy Division, director at Factory Records and an all round Manchester legend. His label ran between 1990 up to his untimely death from a heart attack in 1999, largely picking up from where Factory's dance music agenda tailed off at the end of the 80s. Gretton was an avowed Black Music fan, latching onto the US House and Electro explosion during the late 80s and following it into his label. This compilation collects 13 of the best from Robs Records and subsidiary Pleasure, starting with Bernard Sumner's remix of the very first release, 'Security' by Miami's Beat Club, running through the deadly dope 'Egyptian Jazz' from Roy Davis Jr and Jay Juniel, to Mr Scruff's classic 'Chicken In A Box' and Daniel Wang's Balearic Balihu remix of J-Walk's 'Buggin Becky'. The two releases from Sub Sub (aka the first incarnation of Doves/or the band that became Doves depending on your age) bookend the set, providing two highlights with 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)' and the timely 'Inside Of This'. Now 10 years since the labels closure this is a choice pick for those prone to a spot of nostalgia.
