Boomkat Product Review:
‘Auringonsade / Pommisuoja’ is Finnish singer-songwriter Ville Leinonen’s thirteenth album since his acclaimed 1997 debut, and you’ll be happy to know it’s still just as peculiar as we’ve come to expect to him and the Fonal imprint. I say he’s a singer songwriter, but his twisting, turning songs are framed in a haze of broken electronics, Northern European folk music instrumentation and cascades of bells. Add a mist of tape hiss and the kind of attitude you only really find in a country that spends six months in dark and six months in light and you’ve got something very singular indeed. Leinonen writes songs that are meant to be absorbed slowly, and while you might not understand a darned word the guy says, the sentiment slowly seeps in, little by little. Tom Waits would no doubt be proud.
