At The Foot Of Nameless Roads
Ensemble Economique is a guise of Brian Pyle (yep, this is a solo project - I suppose that's just about as economical an ensemble as you could possibly get), whose name you may recognise from the lineup of Starving Weirdos and RV Paintings. The eight pieces on this album range from extended tonal drift-scapes to brief exercises in dissonance, each approaching the field of drone from a different angle. Clearly Pyle is no part-timer and his varied, often very challenging music takes in a broad range of influences. 'Light Reflects As Seagulls Dive' sounds like a ferociously discordant take on Chinese classical music, with its bold use of drums and flailing, distorted woodwind, while 'In Each Cracked Shell There Is Restless Time' resides in a more tranquil, echo-saturated sonic universe, as is the case with the magical title track, which glides along, rich in overtones and incidental feedback. Closing piece 'Fire!', as hinted by its billing, takes field recordings of crackling campfires, with Pyle mirroring the frenetic flamelicked sounds via his own unstable, screeching tones. Recommended.
