At The Ferranti Institute
The UK's Premier Ladies Combo Organ Quartet (perhaps the UK's only Ladies Organ Quartet) have been creating a very curious blend of Kosmische-tinged prog rock for the last few years now, holding regular live sessions at the South Manchester Museum of Keyboard Technology (S.M.M.O.K.T) alongside Professor Vernon World (aka Graham Massey!) on drums. The precedents for this sound are few and far between, crossing elements of German Kosmiche music with a live version of the Ghost Box releases, a splash of Goblin and a flash of voodoo Jackie Mittoo. 'At The Ferranti Insititute' trips out over eleven tracks of supremely odd and haunting jams, driving from glam stomp-offs like 'Tiger Ghee', to Klaus Wunderlich-on-acid style noodle offs on 'Volkswagen', via skronky Italo disco 'The Don' through to proper psyche jams like 'Beat Girl'. Largely Massey's contribution is well measured and balanced throughout, mixing his motorik drumming to drive the Ladies arpeggiated basslines, splurting kosmiche keys exactly where they need to go. Brilliant fun.
