Boomkat Product Review:
I was primed for another fatty pretentious release, packed with promise but ultimately unable to deliver entirely. How wrong I was, I guess I should have known this was going to be special, the lineup for starters is enough to get you salivating – Zorn’s vision is realised by none other than Mr. Bungle founders Mike Patton (vocals) and Trevor Dunn (bass) with jazz percussion virtuoso Joey Baron on drums. This is the same earth-shaking trio that played on the equally as breathtaking ‘Moonchild’ album, and their thrash-rock complexity here has never sounded quite so intense and all-encompassing. We already know from the heads involved that we’re going to get something academically stunning, but what grabs you about ‘Astronome’ is the sheer riotous abandon involved, okay so it’s three long tracks framed as ‘acts’ in an ‘opera’ but as soon as Dunn’s fuzzed out bass hits your eardrums and Patton starts to garble and spit jumbled up syllables then you realise that the concept doesn’t even come close to explaining the power harnessed on this disc. If you like your experimental rock explosive and deeply engaging with maybe an occasional dabbling in the occult then look no further, just ace.
