Boomkat Product Review:
Captivating, animist investigations of brass instruments from leading improvisors, Axel Dörner, Franz Hautzinger, and Mazen Kerbaj - all on trumpet - together with Carl Ludwig Hübsch on tuba, all under the Ariha Brass Quartet banner.
Recorded in Beirut, spring 2013, and originally issued on CD by Al Maslakh, this new Discrepant vinyl edition gives new voice to their highly disciplined yet feral spirits. Taking cues from the European school of improvisors such as Derek Bailey or Eddie Prevost’s AMM, as opposed to the American systems, they use various extended techniques to render a bewildering array of innovative sounds from their gleaming tools, something best likened to a menagerie of alien creatures squabbling over the last drops of water in a desert oasis, or equally emulating tectonic movement and ritualistic dances with the absurd charm of Rashad Becker’s notional species, who coincidentally mastered and cut this mental slab (Rashad that is, not the notional species!).
