Boomkat Product Review:
Slow ’n steady does it for Nervous Horizon, introducing Ehua with six tresillo depth charges on her debut proper after appearing on the label’s 3rd compilation.
Linking the muggy pressure of OG dubstep to 2021’s prevailing dembow and dancehall currents, Ehua serves a coolly defined sound in six stripped down parts crossing lines between early Shackleton, Beatrice Dillon and DJ Python.
‘Aquamarine’ starts up on a slow fast tip with heartracing thuds yoked to halftime subbass in underwater soundsphere, while ‘Xantho’ toils lilting tabla patterns on a dry sort of Gqom groove, and ’Silica’ dances around ten tonne subs like a prime Cyrus number. The viscous wobble of ‘Black’ loads the EP’s most concentrated slow slugs, and ‘Diatom’ dials in vintage, knackered vibes alongside the crisp dembow cadence and torsion of ‘Jellyfish.’
