Having started out years ago in Idaho, old school friends Aaron Chapman and John Bowers have finally settled in Portland after roaming various parts of North America. Apple's Acre is the band's second album, following on from 2007's Sargent House release, Hangin' Nothin' But Our Hands Down, and it's a surreal and psychedelic affair, conceived in an attic using great vocal harmonies, scrambled and primal Paw Tracks-styled percussive strategies and great melodies - songs like 'Caterpillar Playground' and 'Apple's Acre' in particular stand out as marvellous pop tunes, adding a sufficient influx of fresh ideas to avoid the Animal Collective comparisons they occasionally court. Excellent stuff from the ever-reliable Dead Oceans imprint.
