Apollo House
Recorded in 1993 in Eindhoven, this extended solo guitar set finds Jim O'Rourke at his most uncompromising, tweaking squealing feedback over devotional string drones. Somewhere between Keiji Haino, Derek Bailey, Sonic Youth, and La Monte Young.
Released as part of TUSK's Editions series, 'Apollo House' was taped live at Het Apollohuis way back in 1993, not long after Jim O'Rourke had dropped the cult drone epic "Disengage" on the Dutch Korm Plastics label. He performed the set at a time when he was locked into an exploration of systems-based guitar music, using electro-acoustic techniques to alter his solo guitar performances and straddle the spectrum of experimental music. Here, O'Rourke begins by exploring the instrument's tonal qualities, hitting the body and allowing the resonance to echo across the venue, before creating a looping drone, and manipulating squealing feedback in place of a solo.
Alternately transcendent and ear-splitting, "Apollo House" is an important document of a fertile era in O'Rourke's creative evolution.
