Boomkat Product Review:
Ape School is the new project from Michael Johnson, frontman in Holopaw (of Sub Pop fame), who setup camp in Gainesville, Florida - point of origin for the likes of Tom Petty, Steven Stills and John Vanderslice. Johnson went on to play in Lilys, but if the internet is to be believed (and I have no idea why it wouldn't) his musical beginnings are far more intriguing, involving a stint in a boyband called Natural (big in the Philippines and Germany, apparently) and a stint as a dancer on various DIsney shows as a child. You may have gathered by now that much of this information is being syphoned off lazy journalists' best friend Wikipedia, so I may as well just go all-out and quote this next bit verbatim: "At the age of 13, he won the titles "Mr. Dance of Florida" and "Teen Dancer of the year"." Remarkable. As for this record, well, there's not much choreography to be launched into here, Johnson embracing some of the more adventurously electronic pop tendencies learned from his time collaborating with Daedelus, as underlined by the beat-shuffling psychedelia of great tracks like 'Floridian Grime', 'My Intention', 'Deathstomp' and 'Wail To God', which commences the album on a wave of multi-layered oscillations and summery, Elephant 6-style leftfield pop.
