Boomkat Product Review:
Fela Kuti was the greatest African musician of all time. This is his second 'Anthology' set in a three part series on Wrasse records, providing a definitive insight to his prime period 1975-1980, split over two discs and backed with an extraordinary and previously unseen DVD of his live performance in Berlin 1978. As is well documented, Fela was a human rights revolutionary with a countless number of wives, living in autonomy against a repressive militant government at his own compound outside Lagos during the time of these recordings. The two discs cover a legendary period at the height of his powers, including cherished standards like the incredible 'Zombie' and 'Colonial Mentality' aimed at the heads of the state, and groundbreaking African funk like 'Everything Scatter', all shot to the core with his irrepressible attitude and stunning support from his Africa 70 cast of players including Tony Allen, Addo Nettey and too many more to mention. The DVD is the icing on a very special cake, featuring a spellbinding Fela and Africa 70 live in concert at the Berliner Jazztage '78. It's almost worth it just to see his florid lime green suit, but the performance is truly amazing. It's a big tip!
