Boomkat Product Review:
Originally issued on Phillip Glass's (then Decca financed) Point Blank label (CD only) a year after Arthur Russell's tragic death in 1993.
It seems that in the latter years of Mr Russell's life Point Blank was the main label supporting the artist and encouraging new music from him. Obviously and sadly no fully rounded album project resulted but what was left (as Audika have proved) was reel upon reel of music just ripe for discovery. Of the fifteen tracks that resulted in this tribute the sound is mostly bare boned Russell magic with his affecting vocals mixed with the cello plucks and bowing, occasional percussion and other subtle touches.
Almost all the tracks are exclusive to this release, two tracks appeared on the Soul Jazz comp and here you also get an alternative take on the classic 'In the Light Of The Miracle'. By now you'll know how important Arthur Russell's music is to us here - this album has just floored us on this hazy summer afternoon and stands as yet another absolutely essential entry in this man's essential catalogue.
A must buy for fans and newcommers alike.
