Boomkat Product Review:
Animal Totem was the very first release by High Wolf, a four-song cassette outing made up from lo-fi cosmic loops, droning synths and tribal percussion. Not Not Fun use the phrase "equatorial electronics" on their website, and that description is pretty much bang on the money. The fizzy heat-haze of 'Swimming With Piranhas' makes for a jubilant starting point, settling into a psychotropic(al) groove that ascends towards a distorted, feelgood crescendo. It could almost pass for a Sun Araw track deprived of the dub influence. The recording fidelity leaves the mix in a state of severe fudginess, though this only adds to the feverish atmosphere of 'Puesto Varadero Wildlife Party' and its pulsating synth-bongo-isms. Closing track 'Un Abrazzo' throws in some blurry vocals, reedy guitars and flipped out tape delays, leaving you hungry for more of this emerging dronester's work.
