Boomkat Product Review:
Two lavishly extended - does he do any other kind? - remixes by Ricardo Villalobos of San Proper. The 'Animal In Club' remix is pretty off-kilter, even by Ricardo's standards, but it's also one of his most musical, song-based renderings, with a totally irresistible descending melody and pinched wah chords; he sounds like he's having the time of his life, frankly, and it's a whole four minutes before he even worries about introducing a kick, only for things to quickly unspool agian into a coda of humid freeform jazz. The 'Animal In Dub' mix, no less than 15 minutes length, goes even deeper; the drums are more prominent, but conventional patterns are rejected entirely in favour of broken, drone-wreathed abstraction. It's seriously one of the best Villalobos versions of recent times, summoning the outright psychedelia of his Achso period, but less overwrought, more jubilant and groove-led. Oh, and if the incredibly vivid acoustics and instrumental timbres on display are anything to go by, the Chilean has learned a lot from his work with Max Loderbauer on that ECM remix project. Seriously good stuff.
