Boomkat Product Review:
Debut album from Amsterdam house freak San Proper, burrowing deep into carnivalesque, electronic pop terrain. The best tracks successfully reconcile his song-based tendencies with rugged 4/4 grooves - like the vintage string sample-driven 'The Architect' and the amazing title track 'Animal', which combines crisp Villalobos-style percussion and lothario vocals with one of the most infectious, sleazy, downwards-descending hooks you've ever heard. 'A Choice Named Joyce''s bumping, Nu Groove-style rhythm is killing us every time, and 'Shells' heads for the haunted ballroom, teaming folky guitar strums with Miasmah-style ambience; on 'Over (The Rainbow)', arguably the album's finest moment, drums are dispensed with entirely. Proper's vocals won't be to everyone's taste, but there's no doubting he's got a way with a tune, and the production is so sharp, warm and witty throughout that you'll find it difficult not to get swept away with it all - we certainly did.
