CHRISTOPHER WILLITS + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO
Ancient Future
‘Ancient Future’ is the gently absorbing 2nd collaboration of tremulous ambient recordings for keys, synth, guitar and computer by Christopher Willits and the inestimable Ryuichi Sakamoto for Ghostly
Both artists bring a worldly sound sensitivity to their sophomore communion. Operating at tip of the tongue-levels of nostalgic inference for warm, even amniotic, states of mind, they unfurl streaks of quiet, train-of-thought melody thru cottony thickets of tenderised fuzz and slow bassy heartbeats across the first side of ‘Ancient Future’, while the other side sees them dematerialise into radiant, shimmering harmonic presence with the gorgeous, gaseous hues of ‘Levitation’, before tying a ribbon-bow of processed guitar in the decaying shoegaze suggestion of ‘Releasing’, and swooning together like an impressionistic abstraction of Talk Talk in ‘Completion’ that appears to be melting and pooling in the lower frequencies.
Simply, lovely sonic tranquillisers.
